Clutch and transmission anatomy
Choose a component to see its function, where the torque or release command travels, and what a technician must verify.
Four power-flow journeys
Virtual lab · clutch holding and gear ratios
Teaching model: an idealized friction clutch has an adjustable capacity. This model compares requested engine torque to an invented capacity value; it does not compute actual slip heat, pedal travel, service tolerances, or road speed. Real clutch torque capacity is not a linear function of pedal position.
When the torque request exceeds modeled capacity, output speed is intentionally not calculated: slipping clutch dynamics require additional information. Reverse sign indicates conceptual change in rotational direction, not a universal gearbox shaft orientation.
Diagnose · four fictional shop cases
Open evidence in any order. Do not make a final diagnostic decision until the essential findings have been inspected. Try again if your first choice is not supported.
Six quick shop decisions
Knowledge check · ten questions
Answer every question before scoring. Each answer receives an explanation. A quiz score is online knowledge evidence only.
Instructor-observed skills · printable worksheet
This worksheet is for a supervised, actual-vehicle session. The instructor must supply the correct OEM service information and decide whether each item is observed. Online scores do not prefill this form.
Readiness and stop-work review
Observed performance (not an auto-grade)
Session-only form. No automatic practical pass, certification, verified instructor identity, or vehicle release.
