AUTONATOMY · COURSE 17.2 · V207

Materials, Joining Methods & Corrosion Protection

Identify what the structure is made of, understand how the engineered joint transfers load, and prove that the repair restores both joint integrity and corrosion protection.

AUTONATOMY · COURSE 17.3 · MODERN FIRST-PASS MODULE

Exterior Panels, Closures, Glass & Sealing

Read the body as a system: fit, attachment, movement, sealing, glass retention and electrical/ADAS dependencies must agree before a repair is considered complete.

Boundary: This teaching module does not replace vehicle-specific OEM body/glass procedures, adhesive cure requirements, restraint/ADAS instructions or structural repair information.

7 Mini-Lessons

Panels: cosmetic vs structural role

Separate bolt-on/cosmetic panels from components whose attachment or geometry affects structure, sealing or system alignment.

Closures, hinges, latches & strikers

Understand door, hood and liftgate motion, support, retention and how gaps reveal geometry or adjustment problems.

Glass as a bonded system

Treat fixed glass, urethane/bonding, pinchweld preparation and retention as an engineered assembly—not just a transparent panel.

Weatherstrips, seams, drains & pressure

Trace how water and air are managed through seals, channels, membranes, drains and body pressure paths.

Power windows & powered closures

Connect mechanical alignment with motors, regulators, switches/modules, pinch protection and learned positions.

Wind noise & water-leak evidence

Reproduce the condition, localize the path and distinguish source from where water/noise finally appears.

Post-repair dependencies

Verify fit, sealing, operation, cure/retention requirements and downstream scan/calibration needs before release.

6-Step Inspection & Service Workflow

  1. Verify the complaint and identify the exact panel, closure, glass or sealing system involved
  2. Inspect gaps, flushness, attachment, hinge/latch/striker condition and signs of prior repair or structural movement
  3. Retrieve current OEM body/glass/service information and identify electrical, restraint or ADAS dependencies
  4. Reproduce the mechanical, wind-noise or water-leak condition and trace the evidence to its source
  5. Correct only the proven fit, attachment, seal, glass or control fault within approved procedures
  6. Verify operation, retention, leak/wind-noise result and all required scan, initialization or calibration dependencies; document the repair

4 Evidence-Gated Cases

Case 1: Door closes hard after minor impact

Rear gap is tight, front gap is wide and the striker shows fresh witness marks.

Best branch: Geometry/closure branch. Prove hinge, opening and structural reference geometry before using the striker to hide a misalignment.

Case 2: Water appears at front floor

The carpet is wet, but the visible drip point is below several possible paths.

Best branch: Water-path branch. Reproduce and trace from source through glass/seam/weatherstrip/drain paths; the wet floor is the destination, not necessarily the source.

Case 3: Windshield replaced; camera warning remains

Glass is installed and sealed, but the vehicle has a forward camera mounted at the windshield.

Best branch: Downstream-dependency branch. Verify correct glass/bracket installation and follow OEM scan/aim/calibration requirements rather than treating glass fit alone as completion.

Case 4: Power window reverses near the top

Motor runs, but the glass binds in the run channel and reverses under pinch-protection logic.

Best branch: Mechanical/control interaction. Check glass alignment, regulator/channel drag and learned-position requirements before condemning the motor/module.
