Mission briefing

Read the drawing. See the circuit. Prove the fault.

Every line, node, terminal, and symbol tells part of the electrical story. In this mini course, you will interpret a simplified 12 V horn-style relay circuit, trace both the control and load paths, and use evidence rather than guesses to locate failures.

10 guided lessons
2 current paths
6 diagnostic cases

Educational model: generic circuit, not an OEM wiring diagram. Actual vehicle circuits, relay pin assignments, test procedures, and component specifications vary; consult service information before working on a vehicle.

Guided Lessons

Interactive schematic

One fuse. Two paths. One relay-controlled lamp.

Close S1 to energize the relay coil and connect contact 30 to 87. Follow the shared feed, control branch, and load branch. Click any labeled component or test point to inspect it.

COIL OFF
LAMP OFF
LAMP CURRENT 0.00 A

Yellow = energized conductive feed, blue = ground reference, green = your trace. Visible illuminated paths are instructional; a live voltage reading alone does not prove usable current or circuit integrity.

Pathfinder challenge

Trace a path without skipping a component

Choose a circuit path. Then select the numbered element on the schematic in the exact order it appears in the circuit. Both paths start at B+ and end at ground, but one energizes the coil while the other supplies the lamp.

Test before you replace

Virtual Multimeter Lab

Use DC voltage mode with the black lead at G201 and select a test point using the red lead. You can also measure directly across two selectable nodes. Set the switch and inject a fault, then compare observations.

V DC (RED − BLACK)0.00 V
LAMP CURRENT0.00 A
RELAY STATUSOFF

Simulated, de-energized/open nodes may float in real vehicles. This beginner model uses defined reference values to keep comparisons clear; verify unexpected readings with loaded testing and manufacturer procedures. Never place an ammeter directly across a power source.

The Challenger's diagnostic bay

Six cases. Different faults. Same method.

The fault is hidden in each case. Use simulated meter readings with S1 closed, compare the source, relay control, lamp feed, and ground, then choose a diagnosis. A component should not be replaced until the relevant supply, ground, and command have been checked.

Final assessment

Show what you can prove

Answer eight questions about symbols, relay paths, measurements, and evidence-based diagnosis. A score of 7/8 or higher passes this knowledge check; hands-on proficiency still requires practical assessment.

Learning progress

Mark lessons complete, trace both paths, diagnose the cases, and pass the assessment.
