Select a component or apply device. The goal is to separate gear members from the devices that connect or hold them.
Power-flow rules that travel from transmission to transmission
| Rule | What it means | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|
| One member drives | Input torque enters through the sun, ring or carrier. | Find which clutch connects the engine/input shaft to that member. |
| One member reacts | A brake, clutch to case, one-way device or second gearset may provide the reaction. | A lost reaction member can create a missing ratio or loss of engine braking. |
| The third member responds | Its direction and speed are determined by the other two members and gear geometry. | Compare commanded ratio with actual input/output speed evidence. |
| Two members locked together | The entire simple set turns together at 1:1. | Direct drive is a mechanical state, not automatically “no clutches applied.” |
Virtual lab · six simple-planetary combinations
Select the input member and the held member. The remaining member becomes the output. This model uses a 30-tooth sun and 70-tooth ring and solves the ideal simple-planetary speed relationship. It is for concepts only.

Speed equation used: (ring speed − carrier speed) / (sun speed − carrier speed) = − sun teeth / ring teeth. Ideal ratios ignore losses, converter effects, clutch slip and compound gearsets.

Apply · diagnose the power-flow clue
Each fictional case requires you to open the essential evidence before selecting a supported next action. These cases teach reasoning, not vehicle-specific repair procedures.
